Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of mental health symptoms do you treat?

We are trained to treat a variety of mental health concerns, such as anxiety, stress, burnout, depression, trauma, dissociation, life transitions, relationship issues, etc. We also help clients navigate identity issues, whether that is gender identity, personal and career identity, or dissociative identities, we are here to walk that journey with our clients. Our specialized training is in trauma and dissociation, but trauma-based symptoms may be mistaken as something else first (eg, anxiety). That’s why we offer a free 15-minute consultation before booking any paid appointments. It helps us get to know you and what you are looking for, for you to get a sense of what working with us would be like, and overall, make sure what we offer matches your needs.

Do you take insurance?

Unfortunately, we are unable to accept most insurance. Mindful Psychology is in-network with Aetna, but some of our services, such as Psychological Testing do not meet Aetna’s criteria for “medical necessity” and would not be able to be used for those services. Superbills can be provided for any eligible service to be used towards out-of-network benefits for all other insurance carriers.

What’s a superbill and what are out-of-network benefits?

Superbills are a specialized receipt that provides all the information your insurance needs to process a claim. When people think of using their insurance, they most often think of using in-network (INN) benefits. However, many plans also have out-of-network (OON) benefits. OON benefits are benefits provided when a person uses insurance for a provider who is OON. Sometimes, the difference in reimbursement for OON or INN benefits can be the same.

For example, if a therapist charges $100, the client would be required to pay the $100 upfront and then can be provided a superbill. The client then would provide the superbill to insurance and wait for reimbursement from their insurer. If the OON plan has a deductible of $500 with an 80% coverage following, the client would pay for 5 sessions at $100 each to meet their deductible, then would be reimbursed $80 for each of the following sessions. Effectively, this results in only paying $20 per session after the deductible is met.

If you have questions about how superbills and OON benefits work, we can help you understand the process and what questions to ask your insurer.

Do you see clients on nights and weekends?

At this time, availability for therapy appointments are on weekdays from 9:30am-12:30pm. Additional services such as therapy intensives or psychological testing is offered on Mondays from 1-4pm. Services are offered both in person at our Park Ave office (limited) or via telehealth. Please contact us for information on general available openings as well as specific openings for in person appointments.

Do you prescribe medication?

No. Dr. Chrissy is a clinical psychologist, not a medical doctor (as psychiatrists are). Her training was focused on clinical services, such as psychotherapy and psychological testing, so she is not able to prescribe medications. Psychotropic medications can be prescribed by a psychiatrist, primary care physician, psychiatric nurse practitioner, and/or others with significant medical training. Although she cannot prescribe medications, she will coordinate with your prescriber to ensure we are all working towards the same goals.
