Why See Us?

Our training and experience in trauma and dissociation has resulted in us being particularly adept at treating clients who have tried “everything” and nothing seems to help. One thing that distinguishes us from other area practitioners is our emphasis on the whole-body approach. We are not just focused on thoughts and feelings (though those are important too), but we consider behavioral patterns, body reactions and sensations, as well as spiritual growth. We want to get to know you. The WHOLE you. And help make everything work together.

There are a lot of mental health professionals and it can be hard to figure out who is going to be the best person to help. We try to make that easy by being upfront about what we do, how we can help, and letting you know when we don’t think we are the best match. Don’t worry, if we aren’t a good fit, we are more than happy to point you in the right direction.

What We Are Not

In behavioral health, there are a lot of confusing terms and overlapping treatment providers. Since confusion can be easy, let’s outline a few things we are NOT:

  • Psychiatrists - Psychiatrists are medical doctors who have undergone a specialty of mental health and prescribe medications for such purposes. There are also other types of medical providers who can undergo additional training in order to be able to prescribe medications. We don’t do this. Our training is specifically focused on mental health, not medical.

  • Life Coaches - In NYS, life coaches do not need any specific training or certification. They tend to focus on the present and future, without focusing on past issues. As a psychologist, the focus of our work is on the present, future, AND past. We dig into all elements crucial to our clients’ lives to help them reach their goals. And we went through a ton of school and continuing education requirements to do it.
